1862 1/- Green SG 90a lettered KD with scarce variety “K” in a white circle in the SW corner.

The variety is very visible and clear of the postmark.

According to De La Rue records all corner letters at this time were produced in advance and entered into plates which had been pierced in the corners ready to receive them. Either the letter slug had been incorrectly inserted or in the early life of the plate the corner letter K was damaged and the damaged letter drilled out and replaced with a letter slug which was incorrectly inserted leaving the circle around the letter still visible.

In my opinion the second explanation is most likely to be correct as the “K”  is centred low within the circle and additionally the circle does not appear on the Imprimatur.

All examples are watermark emblems and have a wing margin on the right.

A scarce stamp which is catalogued at £2750.00.
